TRAIL RATINGS

 

LEVEL 1:  Easy hike. Suitable for most people. Typically: easy climbs, easy grades, and good trail conditions.

 

LEVEL 2:  Average hike. Suitable for most hikers. Typically: moderate climbs, moderate grades, and average trail conditions.

 

LEVEL 3:  Intermediate hike. Suitable for fitter hikers. Typically: harder climbs, steeper grades, longer distances, and rugged trail conditions. 

 

LEVEL 4:  Strenuous hike. For the more adventurous. May contain: steep, high climbs, long distances, or poor trail conditions.

FEBRUARY 1-WEDNESDAY-6 PM-JACKSON PARK -Level 2, up to 4 or 5  laps (RR)
Meet at the parking lot at Jackson Park Track by the gazebo and pond.
Directions:  Reach it from Fulton or Wales Rd.  (241).  Parking lot is ½ mile west of Wales Rd. on the right.

FEBRUARY 5-SUNDAY-2 PM-LAKE AVENUE TRAILHEAD TOWPATH (ERNIE’S)–Level 2, 5 miles(RR)  Directions:   From Rt. 30:  Follow Rt. 21 into Massillon and exit at Lake Ave.  Ernie’s is on the southwest corner of Rt. 21 and Lake Ave. Refreshments at the Blue Heron afterwards.

FEBRUARY 8-WEDNESDAY-10 AM-CANTON GARDEN CENTER CEMETERY HIKE-Level 3, 5 miles (RR).  Meet and park at the Canton Garden Center Lot in the Canton Park System.  You can enter the park from 12th St. NW. in Canton.  Get there from Cleveland Ave. NW to 12th St.

FEBRUARY 11-SATURDAY-10 AM CAMP TUSCAZOAR- Level 3, 5 miles (RR)
Directions:  Take I77 south to Bolivar/Zoar exit.  Take Rt. 212 left (east) through Zoar to Rt. 800, turn left (north), go a short distance, turn right (east), go over a bridge, turn right onto Boy Scout Rd. and go to camp entrance on the right.  Lunch at the Firehouse (old Zoar Tavern) after the hike.

FEBRUARY 12-SUNDAY-2 PM-ME AND MY DOG HIKE-NEW HIKE CANTON CITY PARK ON MARTINDALE RD- Level 2, 5 miles.  Directions:  Take I77 into Canton, then Rt. 62 east to Middlebranch Rd.  Turn left at the light.  Then left onto Martindale Rd.  Trailhead is on the right.

FEBRUARY 18-SATURDAY-10 AM-JUDY SNYDER’S FARM IN CARROLLTON -ME AND MY DOG HIKE-Level 3, 5 miles  (RR)  Bring a dog or not. Goliath (large friendly Irish wolfhound) will be hiking with Judy.
Meet at the farm of Judy Snyder:  2223  Montero Road NE,  Carrollton.
Directions: From Canton, take Route 43 south towards Carrollton.  Follow Route 43 as it turns left at Waynesburg and as it turns right at Malvern.  About 4 miles before reaching Carrollton, turn left on Route 171.  Drive 2 miles on Route 171.  Go straight across Route 9.  Route 171 becomes Route 71.  Follow Route 71 exactly 3 miles.  Turn right on Montero Road.  This is a gravel road that only goes to the right.  Judy’s farm is at the first crossroads, about half a mile down Montero Road.  There are 5 miles of trails on her 150 acres, most of which is gently rolling, with a few steeper hills.

FEBRUARY 19-SUNDAY-2 PM-PORTAGE LAKES STATE PARK -Level 3, 5 miles
Meet at the first parking lot on the right in the park.  Directions:  Take I77 north to the Rt. 619 exit.  Go north (right) to Rt. 619, then turn left onto Rt. 619.  Go to Rt. 93 and turn south (left) for about a mile to the park entrance on the left.  See the old Tudor mansion and Turkeyfoot Lake.

FEBRUARY 25-SATURDAY-10 AM- ANNUAL HIKE, LUNCHEON AND MEETING-BOCCA GRANDE RESTAURANT ON ERIE AVE. BETWEEN MASSILLON AND CANAL FULTON.
HIKE ON THE TOWPATH -  Level 2, 6 miles (RR)
Hike at 10 AM, eat at 12 noon.  This will be our 20th Annual Meeting to install the new officers.

FEBRUARY 26-SUNDAY-2 PM-ME AND MY DOG HIKE-HOOVER COMMUNITY RECREATION AREA- Level 2, 5 miles  (RR at Starbuck’s or Jimmy John’s)
Meet at the parking lot for the complex by the Little League Soccer Fields.  Directions:  From the square in North Canton, take East Maple St. for 1.2 miles to the first ball field parking lot on the left.  We will hike the trail behind the fields and maybe the new path by the Sanctuary and the high school.

Hilltop Hiker Dues

At the August board meeting, it was voted to raise an individual membership to $10 and a household membership to $15 for 2012.   Our dues go to pay for newsletter costs, the rental of various event sites, paper products and supplies and membership in various local organizations that promote hiking and trail development.

YOU ARE INVITED TO THE 7TH ANNUAL HILLTOP HIKERS CARD PARTY!!!!

The party will be hosted by Debbie and Leigh Withnell, 6460 Shipslanding Ave NW, Canton OH 44718, on Saturday February 11 from 6:30 - ? Plan to eat at 6:30. Non-alcoholic drinks, cups and silverware will be provided. Please bring a covered dish to share, especially main courses.
Card games will be Euchre and Hearts, beginning at 7:30. All hike club members and guests are welcome! Please come to socialize, even if you don’t play cards.

NEW MEXICO TRIP 2012

We are planning a trip to New Mexico, with hiking in Bandelier National Park, Dale Ball trails and Santa Fe National Forest, with side trips to Albuquerque and Taos.
Trip dates are Sunday April 29th – Sunday May 6th. You may begin booking your rooms at the Santa Fe Motel and Inn by calling Brian or Maribel at 1-800-930-5002. The website is ( santafemotel.com/rooms/).
Four rooms are left for booking. Please let Debbie know when you book (debwithnell@gmail.com) or if you need a roommate.
We have rooms 1-14 on hold until February 29th 2012 under “Hilltop Hikers”.  The cost for this block of rooms is $119.00 plus tax for a total of $137.07.  A credit card is required to hold the room, but will not be run until 72 hours before. There is a 72 hour cancellation policy.
